Environmental monitoring is an important step in the contaminated site investigation process. Air, soil or water samples along with pertinent supporting data are collected from site over time to gain a more complete understanding of how contaminants are moving and changing concentrations within the environment. Many remediation strategies take time to complete and it is necessary to have an environmental monitoring program in place in order to assess the efficacy of the remedial approach. When remediation is not an option it is often necessary to initiate an environmental monitoring program alongside a risk assessment, to ensure contamination does not pose an unacceptable level of risk to people and the environment.
